Prof. Carmen Tanner is research partner of an interdisciplinary project designed to examine how to cope with ethical, legal and social challenges of big data in the insurance industry. This project is part of a Swiss National Research Programm (NFP 75 Big data) and funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF). Main applicants are PD Dr. Markus Christen (University of Zurich), Prof. Dr. Florent Thouvenin (University of Zurich), Prof. Dr. Christian Hauser (University of Applied Sciences HTW Chur). The insurance industry is certainly one of the industries making increasingly use of digital innovations, such as big data. Yet, big data is also likely to pose serious legal, social and ethical risks which are to be taken into account. In collaboration with a large insurance company, researchers from management, ethics, law, psychology and sociology will contribute to the following main questions. Which ethical values and rules by be threatened by which application of big data? How can the insurance industry cope with such challenges and conflicts of values from a technical, social and legal point of view? Project duration is 2017-2018.
