18.00 – 19.30 Uhr
virtuelle Ringvorlesung | Dr. Elias Steinhilper
"Migration and Asylum Politics in Times of Crisis" | 3. Teil "Solidarities in Motion. Hybridity and Change in Migrant Support Practices" Vortragender: Dr. Elias Steinhilper | Deutsches Zentrum für Integrations- und Migrationsforschung (DeZIM) Berlin

The crises of the Eurozone and of European migration politics mark critical moments in Europe’s recent political history and share similarities to the extent that they have both increased political conflict, mobilized large parts of civil society, and put renewed attention upon the notion of ‘solidarity’. Drawing from a wide range of migrant support practices in Germany, this talk argues that times of crises have increasingly blurred the lines between contentious and non-contentious forms of civil society engagement. Scrutinizing these dynamics of hybridization, the talk bridges diverse, yet largely disconnected literatures, including social movement, civil society and humanitarian studies. In particular, it suggests that the disciplinary and analytical distinction between volunteering and non-profit activities on the one hand and social movements and political activism on the other is too rigid to understand diverse and ambivalent practices unfolding within an increasingly contested European border regime.
