How to constantly innovate platform-based business models by integrating startup's solutions


Today, four out of the five most valuable companies around the world are pursuing platform based business models. The focus of the companies has shifted from achieving cost leadership or quality leadership only, to a distinction from their competition through innovation. By pursuing a platform based business model strategy and establishing an industry platform, enterprises acting as a keystone can extend their own value proposition with complementary innovations of external niche partners. Within the literature, the question arises how established companies can incentivize startups to constantly develop complementary innovations for their platform. By using a multiple case study approach, contributions are made to this question, outlaying rules for the architecture and govenance of platforms to constantly develop new innovations.
