Master | Communication & Cultural Management

Program: Master of Arts in Communication & Cultural Management | CCM

Managing the Age of Diversity

Annelies Peiner, Communications and Cultural Management, Fall Semester 2003/2004:

‘Our university is something special because it not only grants individuality to its students, it explicitly encourages it. It appreciates and challenges the strengths of every one of us - every day there is a new and exciting heterogeneity which incites one to give one’s best.’

The Combination of a Research Orientation in Communication and Cultural Sciences with Management Competencies

In pluralistic and global societies the ability to communicate and act in an international context is needed more than ever. The graduate program ‘Communication and Cultural Management | CCM addresses these challenges. By way of in-depth and systematic analysis of the theories of communication and cultural sciences, students gain a thorough understanding of the functions and problems of contemporary societies. The department’s programs convey to students important research methods in the humanities and social sciences as well as the skills required for social and cultural analysis. Set in a seminar environment, the programs, much of which are independently designed by the students, enhance the capacity for perception, design and expression. In addition, students gain crucial research experience and develop their organisational skills and team spirit by way of concrete research, consulting, and exhibition projects.

The graduate program Communication & Cultural Management | CCM is offered in two primary versions:

The consecutive graduate program provides students with related undergraduate degrees in the humanities, social sciences, or cultural or communication sciences the opportunity to gain a well-founded competency profile in the area of management-oriented communication and cultural science and to build upon their previous undergraduate experience.

The non-consecutive graduate program allows students who hold undergraduate degrees in unrelated areas to gain a new specialisation in the field.

Both teaching and research concepts highlight the practical and theoretical interrelationships between media, communication and culture in the global knowledge society. International and intercultural concepts feature prominently in this program. The first two semesters are taught primarily in English. Subsequent semesters may be offered in both English and German. Papers and other research projects may be completed in English with the instructor’s permission.

However, intermediate-level German skills are a prerequisite for admission to this program. Applicants who are uncertain of their German language skills may wish to consult a language centre for evaluation before applying. Applicants who do not speak German should contact Dr. Gary Anderson, Head of the International Office at Zeppelin University, before applying.
In the graduate program Communication & Cultural Management | CCM, students acquire…

| Contemplative Ability in Cultural Theory by dealing with topics and problems of cultural research and analysis, art and culture mediation, and the history of ideas and social change.

| Competence in Communication and Media via the analysis of problems in social communication, knowledge management, and by way of their research

| Competence in Management is conveyed by the multidisciplinary curriculum and teaching combined with the latest findings in management research. Students acquire an appreciation for society as a whole and an understanding of cultures.

Depending on the specialisation and one’s prior degree, additional career opportunities may exist in journalism, music, advertising, as arts curator, event and festival management, company-specific arts management and cultural work, and communication management of organisations and companies.
