Chair for Communication Studies & Anthropology of Knowledge | Profile

In global times the contact between people from all over the world is constantly growing. The internet, as well as other digital technologies, provides manifold connectivity and the worldwide, apparently free flow of information. The transfer of knowledge using the new digital infrastructures of communication, however, is limited. As an individual and collective ability that allows appropriate action, knowledge is culturally bound to values and norms, to practices and procedures, as well as to institutions and cosmologies, that evaluate its validity and assess it as true or false.

The research at the chair studies the cultural ties of knowledge and researches the conditions on which knowledge becomes mobile, i.e. applicable in new cultural contexts, e.g. when people migrate and meet new social and cultural orders. The targeted transfer and distribution of technologies or expert knowledge, e.g. into peripheral economic regions also requires the mobilisation of knowledge and the willingness to combine it with or integrate it into an existing body of knowledge. Interpersonal communication and communication transferred via media play a central role in such transfer processes, even where acquisitions occur rather incidentally and the more or less random distribution of symbolic forms and practices happens.

The publication series "Wissen - Kultur - Kommunikation" discusses the genesis, transfer and distribution of knowledge in its cultural connectivity. The target group includes, in addition to the scientific communities, also relevant practical fields. The series has a transdisciplinary orientation.

The research at the chair focuses on

- Transculturality/interculturality and diversity
- Culturality of technology and new media
- Cultural anthropology of learning
- Social space and life-world
- Cultures of working and learning
- Methods of cultural analysis
